February 2010 Online Workshop

Developing the Perfect Pitch and the Winning Synopsis through Narrative
Structure
Instructor: Jennifer Talty
When: February 1-28, 2010
Cost: $20 for HCRW and CRW Members, $25 for All Others

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
The key to writing the great book is understanding the craft of writing. The key to getting the attention of an agent or editor is through your ability to take a 100k novel that took you close to a year to write and break it down into a 1 to 2 page synopsis. Even harder is to reduce the novel into a
few sentences so that it conveys the essence of your story. This is no easy task for a writer.

This course will go over how to extract the KEY, ESSENTIAL, ELEMENTS of your story using Narrative Structure as the basis for your synopsis. I will offer lectures, as well as hands on time with your current work-in-progress so that you can see exactly how this method works. Then, once we have a bare bones outline, we will use that to draw out a pitch (which will also be the opening of your query letter) that is no longer than 3 to 5 sentences. The key is to first find your inciting incident, your major turning points, the dark moment, climactic scene, and resolution and only those elements of your story (this is your synopsis). Then, by examining these essential elements,
we will pull our protagonist, antagonist, (goals and motivation) the main conflict and plot, and the key hook we will develop the perfect pitch.
