set the course for her Strangely Beautiful series. The dramatic, historic,
spiritual and paranormal are the primary forces in her lyrical, eerie,
atmospheric fiction. While performing in the regional theatre circuit she
adapted works of 19th Century literature for the professional stage and her
one-act plays such as Favorite Ladygarnered national attention and continue
to be produced around the country. She hit the fantasy fiction scene with
her novella Dark Nestwhich won the 2009 Prism Award for excellence in
Futuristic, Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. Her critically acclaimed debut
novel, The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker is the first in her
Strangely Beautiful series of ghostly, Gothic Victorian Fantasy novels

03/15/10 - 04/10/10 - Online Workshop: How to Construct a Killer Query by Vivi Anna

How to Construct a Killer Query by Vivi Anna
From Monday, March 15 2010
To Saturday, April 10 2010

Query letters are the keys to the publishing doors. They are usually the first contact a writer makes with a potential agent or even an editor. A killer query can open those lines of communication and grant an opportunity to the author to make that agent or editor perk up and take an interest in the author's work. Sometimes an author only gets one chance to make an impression. An author needs to make a good one with a killer query letter that showcases their story as unique but saleable.

Write query letters as if you're trying to sell a movie to a Hollywood producer. Queries should be short, succinct and snappy. Like a logline for a movie, they should tell the uniqueness of the story in as few words as possible. Get that agent or editor to want more.

Course outline:

• examining movie loglines
• examining high concept pitches
• excavating the gems in your story
• how to turn those gems into pitch worthy gold
• crafting the query
• editing your query
• adding a good solid bio with or without credits
• critiques of your finished product

Ten lucky students will get an extra bonus at the end of the class. Agent Laura Bradford will read your queries and give you her thoughts on why it does or doesn't work.

$30.00 Register Here

Instructor: With ten books in print and several novellas and short stories in anthologies and ebook form, Vivi Anna has oodles of experience writing query letters that work. She's published with Silhouette Nocturne, Kensington, Avon, Ellora's Cave, Samhain and Loose ID. Before selling to New York, she'd written several screenplays and had all of them read by top Hollywood producers because of her skill of making an impression—with the killer query letter.

Vivi's a recent Romantic Times Reviewer Choice Award winner and second time nominee for 2009. She's finaled and won several writing contests including the Golden Quill and the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence. And in 2002 she made it to the top 10% of writers at the prestigious Screenwriting Expo in Los Angeles.

"When Vivi Anna announced her first workshop, I immediately signed up. Not only was I a fan of her work, but I was also an author just getting my feet wet in the erotic romance industry. Throughout the informative workshop, Vivi Anna shared a multitude of resources, and taught with ease and confidence. I continue to use the many tools she provided to this very day. I wouldn't hesitate to sign up for another workshop with her. " ~Ann Cory, published with Samhain, Ellora's Cave, Liquid Silver, and Resplendence.

6/14/10 - 7/10/10 - Online Workshop: The Lessons of Firefly: Learning from the Works of Joss Whedon

June 14 – July 10, 2010

"THE LESSONS OF FIREFLY: LEARNING FROM THE
WORKS OF JOSS WHEDON"
with Jacqui Jacoby

About the Class:

Joss Whedon, Hollywood writer/director and creator of the FIREFLY approved this workshop.

Though Joss Whedon's television show FIREFLY only aired through the fall months of 2002, it has continued to generate followers through word of mouth, DVD sales and an exhaustible amount of followers known as "Browncoats". The Romance Writers of America has many "Browncoasts" in their midst as Jacqui Jacoby learned though discussions with members at the RWA National Conference in both Atlanta and Dallas. Many of these followers love to listen and talk about what they learned from watching the series. Discussing dialogue is a favorite pastime, both at the conferences and online in writing loops.

FIREFLY, created by the Rod Serling of our generation, was a masterpiece of writing. Each of its thirteen episodes taught character development, dialogue and plotting techniques. Its motion picture sequel, SERENITY, not only touched on these subjects but added relationships, loyalties and loss to it's repertoire.

In this workshop, Ms. Jacoby will reveal the lessons of FIREFLY. By using class participation and examples from the episodes, she will translate with words what Mr. Whedon was teaching us on screen.

Joss Whedon has reviewed this workshop and has given his permission for it to be offered to The Romance Writers of America.

About the Instructor:

Jacqui Jacoby is an award winning writer, who has penned nonfiction articles for various RWA Chapter newsletters including The Kiss of Death, The Orange Blossom and The Heartbeat of Denver, as well as RWR Magazine. She has met with such notable
authors as Nora Roberts, Suzanne Brockmann and Debbie Macomber. She has done phone interviews with editors and agents and she has conducted e-mail interviews with Sandra Brown and Jayne Ann Krentz, just to name a few.

When asked how she got started in writing, Jacqui Jacoby looks a little confused. "Actual writing? You mean like pen to paper?" she wants to know. "Not until about 1989... April in fact. My son was eleven months old, my daughter about three. I'd been out of school for a year and a half and I was going a little batty. So, finally, I began to write down the stories that had been playing in my head."

These days, Jacqui spends five days a week at her computer, creating her stories and writing her articles. "The most fun, though, is the research," she says. " I've worked with rock bands and spoken to the CIA to get info for books."

A graduate of UCLA, Jacqui lives in the Arizona mountains with her husband
of twenty three years and their three semi grown children.

05/10/10 - 06/15/10 - Online Workshop: Another Time, Another Place with Terry Blain

May 10 – June 15, 2010

"Another Time, Another Place"
with Terry Blain

About the Class:
Historical romances should transport readers to another time and another place. This workshop will help you with the tools you need to transport your readers. Workshop will cover a discussion of all the elements that make a historical romance historical. Items covered include aspects of research, such as where to look for information, how accurate you should be and keeping records of your research. Also covered is how to integrate your information in to the framework of your story through the craft of writing. Topics covered will be settings and costume, attitudes and social mores, dialog, including using dialect or not and, of course- sex scenes.

About the Instructor:

Terry Irene Blain was lucky enough to grow up in a large Midwestern family with a rich oral tradition. As a child she heard stories of her ancestor's adventures with Indians, wild life and weather so naturally she gravitated to the study of history in college.
Her military service was as an electronic technician at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego where she helped maintain the radio communication gear for both the Navy and the civilian Air Traffic Control Facility.
After the service, she used the GI bill to continue her education and received her Masters in History along with a second BA in European Studies which she used to teach US History and Western Civilization at the college level. Married to a sailor (now retired) for over thirty years, she's had the chance to live in various parts of the country and to travel to foreign places such as Hong Kong, Australia, England and Scotland.
Terry says: "My degrees in history and my teaching experience make me a natural to write historical romance. Writing historical romance gives me the opportunity to pass on stories of who we are and where we come from while exploring the relationship between men and women. What could be more fun than that?"

Murder One - April

Title: Does Size Matter? Yes! Big City Cop - Small Town Cop

Instructor: Phyllis Middleton and Kathy Bennett

Class Description: If you're writing a cop or detective story one thing you have to consider is the size of the department where your character(s) work. While there are many aspects of police work that are fairly standard, there are some significant differences between the way large and small agencies operate. In creating your characters and their worlds, you need to have insight into some of the variations to assure your readers aren't throwing your book across the room for lack of credibility. The topics we'll investigate, and the differences they encompass are:

  • Personnel
  • Officer training
  • Officer duties
  • Female officer acceptance
  • Inter-personal relationship policies
  • Work schedules
  • Equipment available
  • Weaponry
  • Crime scenes
  • Working with other agencies
  • Politics
And yes, we'll even cover some similarities

Instructor Bio: Kathy Bennett has been a Los Angeles Police Officer for nineteen years and is currently assigned as a Senior Lead Officer. She is responsible for crime and quality of life issues within approximately five square miles of the San Fernando Valley. She's also been a Firearms Instructor at the LAPD Police Academy, a crime analyst in the "War Room", a Field Training Officer, worked undercover in various assignments and is a certified DARE instructor. She's been named Officer of the Quarter twice, and Officer of the Year once.
Kathy has written two romantic suspense manuscripts and is currently working on her third book. Find out more about Kathy at: http://www.kathybennett.com/

03/01/10 - Online Workshop: Paranormal Forensics with Katherine Ramsland

KOD's Coffin Proudly presents March workshop:

Murder One - March
Title: Paranormal Forensics
Instructor: Katherine Ramsland

Class Description: In 1961, a cop attempted to fingerprint a ghost, and there's even been paranormal evidence in the courtroom. Many murder sites around the world yield ghostly tales, which makes the incidents themselves more chilling. Ghost hunters today believe that with the latest cutting-edge technology they can access the "other side" to shed light on both active and
unsolved cold cases, and among them is the belief that murder victims linger to see justice done.

It's CSI meets Ghost Hunters when Katherine Ramsland, author of Ghost: Investigating the Other Side and numerous books on forensics, combines these disciplines. Sometimes she reports others' investigations, but often she has explored a crime scene herself. In this class,
she'll offer factual background of several crimes and their investigations, as well as reveal the reports of paranormal events involved. During the course, she will analyze a murder incident with tools from both worlds.

Instructor Bio: Dr. Katherine Ramsland counts a master's in forensic psychology from the John Jay College of Forensic Science among her graduate degrees and currently chairs the Social Sciences Department at DeSales University , where she teaches forensic psychology and criminal justice. She has been writing about forensics for over a decade, including books with former
FBI profilers. Among her 37 books are Ghost, The Forensic Science of CSI, The Forensic Psychology of Criminal Minds, The Real World of a Forensic Scientist (with Henry C. Lee), A Voice for the Dead (about exhumations), and The Devil's Dozen: How Cutting Edge Forensics Took Down 12 Notorious Serial Killers. With a local coroner, she has documented cold cases where she lives that also have paranormal components.

03/01/10 - Online Workshop: The 4 C's: Building Characters and Plot with Sue Viders and Becky Martinez

KOD is proud to present:

Killer Instinct - March
Title: The 4 C's: Building Characters and Plot
Instructor: Sue Viders and Becky Martinez

Class Description: Building a truly great character can be a mystery, especially when the writer is trying to fit that character into today's action driven plot. Join us for an interactive workshop that can help with both.

As introduced in the book, Ten Steps to Creating Memorable Characters, the Four C's help to define a character's role in a book, even as it assists the writer in beginning to construct a fast-paced plot.

By discovering the character's path, both internally and externally, through the use of the four C's, a writer can begin to shape the protagonists as the plot unfolds.

The class includes lectures with exercises offered after each lecture.

Participants will receive critiques and advice from both Becky and Sue on their exercises. Other class members will also be invited to provide ideas and advice.

Instructor Bio: Sue and Becky have been teaching on-classes for many years, as a team and individually. They have presented at numerous conferences together and separately. Both have given sessions at the national Romance Writers of America Conference.

Sue Viders is the author of more than 20 books, numerous articles and columns for both artists and writers. Her writing book Heroes and Heroines, Sixteen Master Archetypes, is used in many college and university writing courses. Her book, 10 Steps to Creating Memorable Characters is gaining use as a practical workbook for writers who want to develop their characters. Her
latest product for writers is Deal a Story; an interactive card game consisting of 101 cards and six sections and is based on her Heroes and Heroines book.

Sue lives in Lone Tree, CO with her husband. Her five grown children and six grandkids live nearby.

Becky Martinez is an award-winning former broadcast journalist and published author. Her latest book, Deadly Messages will be published by The Wild Rose Press in February 2010. Her first published romance novel was an Aspen Gold finalist. She has had several short stories published, including "The Problem" in July 2008 by The Wild Rose Press and she contributed a short
story to The Trouble with Romance, an anthology that was a 2007 New Mexico Book Award finalist.

She was also one of the co-authors of Ten Steps to Creating Memorable Characters, a workbook for writers and with Sue has been working on a book on plotting.

She lives in Littleton, Co where she still freelances as a public relations consultant and teaches classes and workshops on marketing, public relations and broadcast journalism.

03/01/10 - 5/31/10 - Online Workshop: Crafting Creative Habits with Mary O'Gara

WritersOnlineClasses.com is proud to present a unique 3-month online class beginning March 1: Crafting Creative Habits with Dr. Mary O'Gara, Ph.D.:
Instructor: Mary O'Gara, Ph.D.

CLASS: Crafting Creative Habits

3-month class $60 Begins March 1, 2010
Registration ends February 28, 2010
Late registrations accepted through March 15, with instructor's permission.

Class Description: Crafting Creative Habits is a life-changing, three-month online class beginning March 1st, with weekly lessons that support you as you build the habits that sustain long-term creative success. Workshop topics range from how to get yourself to work every day to supporting your most cohesive and vital creations to learning from and moving past the inevitable creative failures and anxieties that plague even the most talented writers and artists.

Celebrated and acclaimed artists and writers make as many mistakes as the rest of us, start work with flawed beginnings like the rest of us, and occasionally fail. What they have, in addition to talent, is habits of creative work that put them back to work after a failure, after a disappointment, or on a day when they'd rather stay in bed.

No one writes about The Creative Habit better than Twyla Tharp, who developed and sustained habits of creative work through a long and honored career as a dancer and choreographer. In her book, Tharp mingles her own practices with those of friends and colleagues from the worlds of writing, music, and visual art to provide a rich buffet of ideas and exercises for all of us.

During the three-month workshop, we'll take one of Tharp's ideas each week, working with Tharp's text, her exercises and supplemental material provided by the instructor.

Mary's workshop, based on Tharp's book, is designed to help writers and artists find and develop their own creative muscles in small increments. The intention is to change lives and increase both the joy and productivity of creative work. The methods are gentle, funny, entertaining, thought-provoking and developed by masters of creative work

Julia Cameron's work nurtures and strengthens the inner artist. Tharp shows us how to put that inner artist to work and keep it working, playfully and consistently.

Required text: The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp

Instructor Bio: Mary O'Gara, Ph.D. is a creativity coach and an award-winning poet and short story writer. Mary began studying human creativity in college and brings a lifetime of experience with creative and body/mind work. 02/28/10 - 03/06/10 - Online Workshop: Writing from the Male POV with Sascha Illyvich

Savvy Authors Presents (SavvyAuthors.com)

Writing from the Male POV

Feb 28 - Mar 6

$10 for Members and $15 for NON-Members

REGISTRATION: http://www.savvyauthors.com/members/admin/event.cfm?EventID=122

Every registration for a Savvy Authors workshop completed between now and April 10th earns an entry in our prize raffle for a chance to win one of over 40 fabulous prizes such as books on craft, software and free classes.

Presented By Sascha Illyvich. In this workshop, learn the ins and outs of character creation from a side of romance we rarely hear from, the male romance reader/writer! Kinky Erotic Romance author Sascha Illyvich shares with us tips on how to create more memorable heroes, avoid some common pitfalls and have more fun with our writing!

What you'll learn from this class

Male Archetypes and how they affect our characters
How (il)logical men think and why they act the way they do
How to take any male character from any movie/story and modify him to fit your story
How to get your man to express his true "self"
What men REALLY care about and how to work with that for your characters*
A man's self view*
The GAY MALE Viewpoint*
The Male Cycle of Emotions and how it compares to the female cycle of emotions
A man's journey in life
What men really think

A few extras

Using character creations sheets (don't groan!) that have all the relevant information
you'll need, you'll be able to craft male characters that are just as deep as your
female characters. Getting inside the heads of your male characters is the most
important aspect of "how to write" them.

Cross gender writing can make or break an author's career if they cannot portray
the opposite gender clearly and accurately. With the growing popularity of M/M
romances, it's becoming increasingly important for males to be portrayed in the
proper light! We'll cover all that here and a lot more over the next week.

03/01/10 - 03/26/10 - Online Workshop: A Noble's Life in Medieval Times with Eliza Knight

Check out this Colorado Romance Writers, Inc. Online Workshop Series class
for MARCH 2010!

Workshop: A Noble's Life in Medieval Times
Speaker: Eliza Knight
Date: March 1 - 26, 2010

DESCRIPTION: Life in medieval times was so much different than the way we live today. When readers sit down with their favorite medieval historical romance, they are taken away to another time and place. For most readers, this is where they learn about medieval times, and it is the duty of the author to be as authentic as possible. That being said, you don't want your book to be a history lecture either, but to just flavor it enough.

This workshop will teach you how people, particularly nobles, lived in medieval times, in order for you to be truer to the era you write about.

This is an open discussion workshop, questions and comments are welcome and encouraged. Lessons are accompanied by pictures, videos when possible, links and articles.
