02/01/10 - 02/13/10 - Online Workshop - Contest Judging and Critiquing 101 with Teresa Bodwell

Contest Judging and Critiquing 101 Presented by Teresa Bodwell

February 1 -February 13*

The Passionate Ink Chapter of RWA has a limited number of spaces available
for this workshop. Registrations will be accepted until they are filled or
11:59pm Feb 1st, which ever comes first. Cost is $10 via PayPal only.

*Description:*

Your experience as a writer and reader of the genre gives you the special
insights needed to form an opinion about the fiction you read. As a contest
judge, your job is to turn your subjective opinion into valuable feedback
and a fair score. This workshop will provide you with guidelines to
accomplish your judging duties (without pulling your hair out). Follow these
steps to become a better judge, help your fellow writers and (bonus) improve
your own writing as well.

1. Read carefully and thoughtfully.

2. Provide comments that are positive, constructive, specific and honest.

3. Avoid editing—be flexible and open to new voices.

4. Understand when to put aside your own tastes and preferences.

5. Understand score sheet terminology.

The class will examine these topics and more.

*The instructor:*

After serving in the U.S. Army, where she helped make the world safe for
John Phillip Sousa music, Teresa Bodwell received her B.A. from UCLA and
J.D. from The University of Oregon School of Law. In over two decades as an
attorney, she learned that happy endings are not always possible. She finds
writing love stories adds balance to her life. Teresa is a firm believer in
the value of writing contests, having sold her first novel after it won two
chapter contests. Her most recent release is a novella in the Kensington
anthology, *My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys*, released in paperback this
month. Visit her website at: www.tbodwell.com
